Under the guidance of Assoc. Prof. Ganime AYDIN from Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Faculty of Education, fourth-year student Melisa ŞENYÜREK successfully implemented the "STEAM Education in Museums" project as part of the TÜBİTAK 2209 program.
The project involved 20 eighth-grade students, aged 13-14, from Fatma Şemsettin Çamoğlu Secondary School. It included three museum visits and subsequent STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) activities. The students participated in engaging activities such as a scavenger hunt and dramatic presentations during their visits to Çanakkale Naval Museum, Çanakkale Troy Museum, and Çanakkale Ceramic Museum.
Following these visits, STEAM activities titled "Let's Build a Battleship," "Our Horse is the Most Durable Trojan Horse," and "Let's Make Ceramics" were conducted at the Science Laboratory of Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Faculty of Education.
The project was well-received by the students, highlighting their enthusiasm for interactive learning experiences. Special thanks are extended to TÜBİTAK, Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Rectorate, Faculty of Education Dean's Office, Çanakkale Provincial Directorate of National Education, and Fatma Şemsettin Çamoğlu Secondary School for their support and collaboration.
The significance of the Çanakkale War in terms of cultural heritage was highlighted through practical activities at the Çanakkale Naval Museum. Similarly, the importance of preserving historical and cultural heritage in the city was underscored at the Çanakkale Troy Museum, a site of global cultural significance. Additionally, the Çanakkale Ceramic Museum played a crucial role in passing down the art of ceramics to future generations.
This project aimed to help students learn science concepts through contextual associations, develop skills in artistic analysis, and raise awareness about the importance of recognizing and preserving cultural heritage. Feedback from participating students indicated a positive reception to these activities.
We extend our sincere thanks to TÜBİTAK, Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Rectorate, Faculty of Education Dean's Office, Çanakkale Provincial Directorate of National Education, Fatma Şemsettin Çamoğlu Secondary School Principal, Çanakkale Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, Troy Museum Directorate, and Çanakkale Naval Museum Command for their invaluable support in realizing this project.
